Dangerous Goods Specialist


The Regulatory Specialist analyzes regulatory concerns and issues pertaining to the distribution of various products with a strong knowledge of DOT, IATA, IMDG, and TDG regulations for VWR International LLC, US (includes Science Education) & Canada. In addition, this position provides regulatory guidance and direction regarding the distribution of hazardous materials, FDA regulations and regulation interpretations that impact the North American Business. Keep informed of regulatory changes and implement the necessary changes to maintain company compliance.


Job Responsibilities:

  • Maintains correct coding on hazardous materials for transportation purposes.

  • Ensures compliance with hazardous material shipping regulations- IATA, DOT, IMDG, and TDG.

  • Keeps current on up and coming regulations that are associated with the transportation industry for hazardous materials. Reviews final rules and assesses compliance requirements.

  • Analyzes potential situation(s), and makes necessary compliance adjustments to products that may be affected by the following:

    • Every time a regulation changes,

    • A supplier changes their classification for shipping and/or

    • There is an update or correction needed to the hazardous material shipping classification and/or packing instructions

  • Performs regulatory coding in support of new and existing products.

  • Warehouse packaging - ensures VWR Single Shipper Packaging is compliant and is re-certified as needed. Works in conjunction with packaging suppliers, testing facilities, and others to coordinate re-certification in a timely manner.

  • Develops metrics for various regulatory reports: i.e.: frustrated shipments, 5800 logs etc.

  • Performs regulatory transportation audits of North American distribution sites.

  • Acts independently and recognizes important changes and issues involving regulatory compliance

  • Works with the chemicals business to improve communications and develop processes and procedures to assure compliance with the proposed and required changes.

  • Works with the Import/Export Compliance Specialists to provide regulatory requirements and information in regards to their respective areas.

  • Ensures regulatory compliance with OGD??s (Other Governmental Department) and OGA??s (Other Government Agencies).

  • Develops and executes training on regulations to identified VWR associates.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Experience & Skills:

  • Solid personal computer skills including Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Access.

  • Knowledge of DOT, IATA, Health, Environmental, Safety, Security, Import/Export, and other applicable regulations.

  • Must be capable of independent work in a matrix organization.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Knowledge of FDA regulations pertaining to drugs and/or medical devices preferred

  • SAP Knowledge is a plus



  • B.S. College degree (preferred) or equivalent experience required.

  • Minimum 3-5 years experience with regulations (i.e. DOT, IATA, TDG, IMDG, Safety, etc.).

  • Transportation certifications a plus.


Environmental Working Conditions & Physical Effort:

  • Typically works in an office environment with adequate lighting and ventilation and a normal range of temperature and noise level

  • Travel (Domestic) 10-20% of time

  • Work assignments are diversified. Examples of past precedent are used to resolve work problems. New alternatives may be developed to resolve problems

  • A frequent volume of work and deadlines impose strain on routine basis

  • Minimal physical effort is required. Work is mostly sedentary but does require walking, standing, bending, reaching, lifting or carrying objects that typically weigh less than 10 lbs

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
